Over 100 Wichita area youth attended the Mayor’s Youth Council’s bi-annual Junior Jumpstart Youth Summit. The opening session challenged participants to identify their Natural High and provided the opportunity to hear from guest speakers David and Lynn Gilkey, of Rise up for Youth. David and Lynn have dedicated their lives to making a difference in the community and were recently recognized at the White House for their work with youth. Together they shared their personal story and spoke to students about the effects of substance abuse and healthy decision making. Students that participated in the day also had the opportunity to attend break-out sessions lead by MYC members that focused on various topics ranging from leadership, to social media, bullying and drug and alcohol prevention.  To conclude the event, students and sponsors created action plans to take back to their schools. A total of fifteen Wichita areas schools were in attendance, North High School, Goddard High School, Haysville Middle School, Pleasant Valley Middle School, Robinson Middle School, Wilbur Middle School, Maize Middle School, Mead Middle School, St. Patrick Catholic School, Gordon Parks Academy, John Marshall Middle School, Coleman Middle School, Holy Savior Catholic Academy, Goddard Middle School and Jardine Middle School.
